Where is Black Friday from and where are the Best Deals in 2018 – read here!

In the last decade, Black Friday has developed quite the reputation for itself. Held predominantly in the United States for year, Black Friday fever has since made its way north to Canada and across the pond to the UK. Black Friday deals touch almost every category of product and has been hailed as one of the best days to get one’s Christmas shopping wrapped. As the sales celebration is fast approaching us, PrimeCables would like to give some insight into where this holiday is from and what we’ll be doing this year for one of our biggest sales days.

Black Friday is held traditionally on the day after the American Thanksgiving. This year, that date falls on November 23, 2018. Though Black Friday is usually a sales holiday strictly for retail, many eCommerce sites and online shopping sites have jumped on the bandwagon either with Black Friday deals or with Cyber Monday deals. Cyber Monday naturally falls on the following Monday, after Black Friday. We know this can all be a little bit difficult to keep track of. In addition to all this, there are some retailers and eCommerce sites that are offering ‘Black Friday sales’ all weekend long and into Cyber Monday. Needless to say, it’s all a lot to keep track of!

Back to Black Friday though, the name was actually first associated with an American financial crisis from 1869. On Black Friday 1869, that’s when the US gold market crashed and Wall Street went bankrupt. It would be decades until Black Friday was associated with shopping sales. The whole phenomenon arrived when US shops found that their annual financial profits would, on average, hit the black the day after Thanksgiving. That is, they only began to turn a profit for themselves on this day, moving from ‘losses in red’ to ‘profits in black’ – hence the name. For these shops, buyers would come to buy discounted merchandise helping to bring them to profit paradise. In the last 20 years, this practice moved towards the world’s biggest corporations doing the same.
