Who doesn’t want a faster charge on their smartphone – of course, everyone! A fast-charging USB-C cable is where you want to focus. In your search for the best USB cable for charging a smartphone, there’s a lot to know about USB-C or USB Type-C cables.
When we think of USB cables, if they look the same we assume they’re the same. This, unfortunately, isn’t true. A lot of USB-C cables being sold aren’t achieving the fast data rates expected. Here’s how to ensure you’re getting the best charge possible.
First, the charger counts. All USB-C cables carry a minimum of 3A current. For fast, high-power charging, you need a USB-C charger that’s at 5A rated with 100-watts and 20-volts of power. Without an adequate charger to capture a high speed, a USB cable won’t deliver more power than what’s provided.

The next thing to realize is there are five different types of USB cables. All of these types are considered USB Type-C and yet offer different specifications.
- USB 2.0 cable is the most common type and boasts 480Mbps in data transfer speed.
- USB 3.2 Gen 1 cable supports between 5Gbps and 10Gbps with a USB 3.2 device.
- USB 3.2 Gen 2 cable supports between 10Gbps and 20Gbps with a USB 3.2 device.
- Thunderbolt 3 20Gbps is a USB Type-C cable with a data transfer speed of 20Gbps.
- Thunderbolt 3 40Gbps is a USB Type-C cable with a data transfer speed of 40Gbps.
Most smartphones aren’t going to need more than a USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps cable. This will give high data transfer speeds without costing a ton. The Thunderbolt varieties are better for connecting laptops with an external GPU or when you have very, very high data transfer demands.
The best USB cables for smartphones do not only have good tech inside. It also has a Nylon braided jacket. A cable with a braided jacket is stronger than a wire. A pet can’t chew through it. If it clamps on a door, it isn’t going to break the copper wire inside.
Don’t buy a cheap, knock-off cable either. Cheap USB cables, in an attempt to provide the charging speed promised, will draw more power than what’s needed. This can damage a smartphone, tablet, or laptop.
Look for reputable, well-reviewed brands. Apple is a key brand, as an example. If it’s Apple-certified, you know it’s a high-quality USB cable.
