What Does FHD and UHD Mean When Buying A Flat-Screen TV – read here!

You may have seen either the terms ‘FHD’ or ‘UHD’ used on advertisements for flat-screen TVs, computer monitors, or laptops. If you don’t know what they are, you’re not alone. Many consumers don’t.

FHD and UHD do stand for something, however, they don’t communicate anything necessary. Information one can gather from either designation is collected through other terms such as 1080p, 4K, and 8K.

‘FHD’ stands for full high definition. FHD means your screen has a resolution of 1920 x 1080. Screens designated as 1080p use FHD technology to achieve it. FHD is commonly used on average-to-smaller sized televisions.

‘UHD’ is ultra high definition and provides a resolution of 3840 x 2160. A 4K flat-screen television uses the aforementioned resolution. UHD is used on larger screens wherein one can enlarge the image without reducing the picture quality.

These terms are important when related to the size of television you’re buying. Larger screens require more pixels per inch. If you take a 720p 32” screen, it can look wonderfully detailed. Transferring 720p to a 55” screen and you lose detail because you’re using as many pixels to ultimately cover more space. This is why larger screens rarely come in 720p anymore. Most shoppers want 4K UHD TVs once they go above a certain size specification.

Initially, FHD TVs began to be used to certify a product was indeed 1080p. Early on with HDTVs, ‘HD-ready’ was a term used on many of the first TVs. This designated units that could take high-definition signals and process them into a reduced-quality signal for the display. Now with technology having progressed in such a beautiful way, FHD came to certify that a 1080p TV delivers a real, detailed 1080p signal.

Like FHD, UHD TVs are there to certify that a 4K TV is indeed a 4K TV. As long as you have the technology to receive the 4K signal, your screen will display the 4K signal. In a sense, UHD is equivalent to saying ‘True 4K’ while FHD is ‘True 1080p’.
