When browsing through TV wall mounts, many consumers have asked, what is VESA? Well, VESA patterns are used to determine the pattern of the four mounting holes on a TV. A TV’s VESA pattern should be found in the manufacturer’s booklet or on their website. If not, simply measure the horizontal distance between the left and right holes, and the vertical distance between the bottom and top holes. What you get is the VESA pattern, as measured in millimetres.

When you know what your VESA pattern is, you then use this to find the right VESA wall amount for you TV. Many wall mounts can accommodate multiple VESA patterns. For example, there are ‘X’ frames and ‘H’ frames, both with their advantages. If you browse Prime Cables selection of VESA TV wall amounts, you will likely find at least a couple options for your TV. Alongside the physical weight and size of your TV, VESA is a third consideration to take into account when buying a wall mount. If you want to avoid any compatibility issues and/or having the hassle of returning the wall mount back to where you purchased it, know your VESA pattern!

The four mounting holes on the back of your TV set should not be difficult to find. All major TV and TV mount manufacturers follow the standardized VESA screw-hole positions. This ensures compatibility across all products.

The history behind VESA is rather interesting. An acronym for ‘Video Electronics Standards Association’, this is a group of over 300 companies who established a set of standards in the consumer electronics industry. One of these standards are the screw-hole pattern on the back of your TV. At times, this VESA configuration may also be referred to as the FDMI or Flat Display Mounting Interface, or the Mounting Interface Standard (MIS). If you cannot find this information in your manufacturer’s booklet or on their website, or you want to save some time and measure it yourself, remember to always use millimetres. VESA readings are taken horizontal by vertical. For example, holes that are 400 mm across and 200 mm high would be shown in VESA format as 400×200.

These are the reasons why VESA is important to get to know a little bit about prior to shopping for a VESA mount. Remember to find one that accommodates the size, weight, and screw-hole configuration of your TV. Trust me. You’ll be on your way to enjoying all the benefits in no time!
